English Lord Arthur Cavershoot is a passionate Napoleon scholar who badly neglects his wife Josephine for his obsession with the French emperor. When the cranky historian travels to a Napoleon conference in Paris, his smart spouse secretly follows him. Unnoticed by her, the city of love threatens to spark a romance between Arthur and a chorus girl.

The lawyer, Dr. Werkmann, is seeking a legal separation for Mr. Bernhof, who claims his wife is an incorrigible gambler. His wife, however, loves him dearly, too, in spite of his faults and doesn't want the marriage to end. Dr. Werkmann proposes something at a family meeting, which just might save the marriage after all.
A spoiled heiress defies her millionaire father by running off to France to pursue her lover. Things don't go entirely as planned.
The film starts with a woman on the run from her millionaire husband giving birth to a daughter in the home of a washerwoman. The woman dies in childbirth, but the baby survives. The washerwoman leaves the baby in a horsedrawn Parisian taxicab (No. 13). The paperwork of the birth is lost in a huge tome. Sixteen years pass. The tome is bought by a poor student. One day his bookshelf collapses, and the tome opens at the page where the paperwork has been hidden. The student realises that the paperwork relates to a millionaire who has spent the last sixteen years looking for his pregnant wife. The student traces the washerwoman, and he tricks her into confessing what she has done with the baby. Meanwhile, the baby has been adopted by the cab driver and his wife, and has grown into Lili Damita.
Maria Sinclair, the wife of the British consul, is about to visit her husband when she is arrested by the Chinese. General Hai Lung, who is in charge, offers to give her husband his life if she would promise to stay with him instead.
