This films tells four different stories, all connected by the banks of a river.
The last days of the historic siege of Messolonghi. The film depicts the whole situation that prevailed in the city after the Turkish siege for many months, and tells the courageous effort of its defenders who are attempting a heroic and desperate exodus.
During the German Occupation, two brothers, Takis and Christos, fight the invaders with great ferocity. Both of them belong to resistance groups – different ones. After the withdrawal of the Germans, the two brothers find themselves in rival camps. One is a captain of ELAS (Greek People’s Liberation Army) and the other one a captain in the Greek army. In the attempt by ELAS to seize the Makrygiannis Gendarmerie Regiment, one of the brothers is killed. A little before the Civil War breaks out, the other brother is transferred to Florina. There, the heroes will experience the tragic events of the Civil War, until the complete collapse of the partisans on the ridges of Mt. Grammos.
A drug addict meets an aristocratic woman who married a criminal.
A scientist, inventor of the "ray of life", is found murdered. The perpetrators are Arachne and the inventor's former assistant, Mona. However, the two naive servants of the deceased took the blueprints of his invention with them when they left: Kokkovios and Sparos. Arachne and her gang constantly set traps to extract the coveted paper from the two fools.
Achilleas, who works together with his friend Paminos at Prokopis’ gas station, tries, via correspondence, to find a rich woman from abroad to marry and, in this way, hit the jackpot.
A dark atmosphere pervades this film in true noir fashion. So does the feeling that our principals are trapped. They fight their way against economic forces and their status in life, and love might conquer all.
A God-fearing young man refuses to sell his, rich in ore, pasture to a mining company. So an agent of this company creates a scam of a so-called miracle in order to convince him.
Christina and her mother have as neighbors a man who dreams of singing and the son of a wealthy family, who is not interested in money but wants to become a painter. Both young men love Christina. She chooses the aspiring painter, against her mother's advice. The couple will have a child, but the man will end up working in construction when he discovers that he suffers from color blindness and therefore cannot paint. With the help of the second man, he reconciles with his father and mother and rebuilds his life from scratch.
