Dr. Claudia Keller works in the research department of the global chemical company Beyler. The company has pinned all its hopes on the development of a revolutionary lifestyle drug called Defaminol. The slimming pill promises consumers easy weight loss. Shortly before the launch of the new miracle pill, Claudia begins to have doubts about possible side effects. She tries to convince management to hold back the drug, but no one listens to her. A nightmare of lies and loss of trust unfolds, and Claudia Keller must decide how far she is willing to go.

Switzerland, 1955. The young orphan Max is sent as a foster child and contracted to work for the Bösiger family who lives on a farm. His foster parents treat him like a workhorse while their son seizes every opportunity to humiliate him. Playing the accordion is the one thing that is entirely his. But when the new teacher stands up for Max, it only makes a bad situation much worse. The only thing preserving his will to survive is his friendship with Berteli, who was also taken on to work at the farm. Max dreams of Argentina with her: a fantasy world, where allegedly even hayforks are made of silver.

Being a politician is a tough job. Federal Councillor Alois Mumenthaler knows this too and makes his way through the sessions as a grumpy and old-fashioned representative of the species. He is pretty much against everything and launches a rigorous anti-drug campaign that turns out to be a flop. His party no longer wants him and his wife even less so. He has also been diagnosed with glaucoma. The man is slowly going blind. A visit to the doctor reveals that cannabis, of all things, has a healing effect and could fight the disease. But a federal councillor and cannabis don't mix. Nevertheless, it is the only way for Mumenthaler to avoid complete blindness and keep his hopes of an operation alive.
Enquiries into the murder of a young woman take the private investigator Peter Keller to the idyllic village of Schwant in Emmental. But, the more entangled Keller gets in the treads of the apparently clearcut case of sex murder, the more obvious the flaws in the village idyll become. Keller's quest turns into a deadly mission.

Zurich-born Hugo Koblet was the first international cycling star of the post-war period. He was a stylist on the bicycle and in life, and a huge heartthrob. Koblet had a meteoric rise and won the Giro d'Italia in 1950. Once he had reached the zenith of his career, Koblet was put under pressure by overly ambitious officials and ended up ruining his health with drugs. In 1954, he married a well-known model and they became a celebrity dream couple. After his athletic career ended, Koblet began to lose his footing. Threatened by bankruptcy, he crashed his Alfa into a tree.
