A love story about a young woman's relationship with two men, the lawyer she was previously married to and a romantic Swedish actor. At the same time, it is a discussion of gender roles: Are a man's work and future more important than a woman's?
At a summer-evening dance a young girl meets a man who tells her he is a doctor. They go off together, and after that she never sees him again. She learns that she is pregnant and inquires about him at various hospitals, with no success. She reads of his engagement and becomes acquainted with another girl with a situation like her own.
Robert, an upper-class officer, meets and falls in love with Iris, a house maid. His family will do anything to stop her from marrying him.
Inga starts working as a trainee at Skå Barnby at Färingsö outside Stockholm. There she gets acquainted with people living nearby. Soon disturbances and conflicts arise between them.
