The film concerns a student, Ch'oe Yeongjin, who has become mentally ill after being imprisoned and tortured by the Japanese for his involvement in the March 1, 1919 protest against the Japanese colonial rule.
The main character, a wealthy family man, falls in love at first sight and leaves his wife. In the end, he squanders his fortune and, abandoned by his beloved, tries to return to his ex-wife, but she has already cut her hair in a nun.
The oldest remaining film in Korea sets in the 1920s for enlightenment
