During a duck hunt the local land owner Brandt has told his ranger and his son to sit in a boat and collect ducks as they are shot down. When Brandt's dog gets in the water he commands the ranger's son to jump in the water to save the dog but the boy drowns.
Early in the 20th century, middle-aged lawyer Fredrik Egerman and his young wife, Anne, have still not consummated their marriage, while Fredrik's son finds himself increasingly attracted to his new stepmother. To make matters worse, Fredrik's old flame Desiree makes a public bet that she can seduce him at a romantic weekend retreat where four couples convene, swapping partners and pairing off in unexpected ways.

A travelling theater-company performs Offenbach's "The Beautiful Helene" when an officer in the audience notices the similarity in appearance between the leading actor Leonard Pettersson and the king Charles XV. With Pettersson dressed as the king and the other actors as the royal suite, they all go to Herrsunda castle where the officer is trying to make an impression on his fiance.
Inga, an unemployed actress meets a sweetheart Kim, from days long gone at a train station. Over coffee they reminisce about their romance and how Inga left Kim for a moderately successful acting career and the attractive theater director Leo Waller.
