1943. Captain Ian Nalepke, Chief of Staff of the Slovak regiment, bearing protection of military facilities in the small town of Belarus contacts the partisansand passes to them the obtained information about upcoming operations of the German forces.

Three boys, Jura, Lenya and Jeanne, visit a village. They meet Tonya, a girl with good dancing skills, and bet to win her love. Tonya develops feelings for Lenya, which he later realises to be real.

On the way from famine-stricken Moscow to the countryside, little Anyuta becomes separated from her mother at one of the railway stations. Ending up at the farmstead of a Belarusian kulak, the girl becomes an unwitting participant in the class struggle in the village.

The movie is based on the the same name novel of the Nobel Prize In Literature Winner Mikhail Sholokhov. The action is taken place in 20-30-s years of the XX century in the Russian countryside going through an uneasy process of collectivization.

The young teacher Lobanovich, who has just graduated from the seminary, comes to the remote Polessky village of Telshino to teach the peasant children to read and write. In the heads of seminarians persistently hammered into the idea that the Tsar-father endlessly cares about the common people, and the people respond to him sincere filial gratitude. Arriving in the village, the teacher saw a different picture. The Poleshuk people are beaten down, driven, living in mud, darkness, tightly entangled in a network of prejudices and superstitions....

1920 year. Having been wounded, the Red Armyman Yusalov arrives in the Kuban village and organizes a music school here, learns the Internationale with his students, and sets up the first revolutionary performance. All this causes fierce hatred among the kulaks, they kill the Red Army. After many years, a new music school will be built in the village and named after the dead hero.

The end of August 1941. At night, a truck rushes along the last road not yet occupied by the enemy to Leningrad. In the back of two — civil aviation pilot Lunin and commissar of the air division Uvarov. Lunin, a man no longer young, experienced, but had not yet been in battle, was sent to the legendary squadron of fighter pilots under the command of Captain Rassokhin. This squadron fought from the first day of the war and has already lost most of its composition.

New teacher arrives to the remote village Krinitsy and not everybody are happy about what he's doing.
