It is 1956. Dau is a distinguished Soviet scientist who meets up with the love of his youth – Maria, a Greek actress – during her three day visit to Moscow. They haven’t seen each other for 25 years. Dau is a successful and prosperous scientist, but feels excruciatingly dissatisfied with his family life. Through Maria he hopes to regain lost harmony and beauty, but reality intrudes when Nora, Dau’s wife, returns home.
Strong-willed Olga Nikolaevna is the boss at home and at work. The only one who breaks the order in her life is her son-in-law-like nothing else. Then one day, the flurry of mutual claims becomes so great that right on a family holiday, the situation gets out of control.

Despite the abyss of disappointment and misunderstanding that has arisen, strong feelings remain between the couple. Another quarrel breaks the unbearable circumstances of the protracted separation. However, the question of “how to be together” hangs over the lovers with an alarming shadow of insolubility. Trying to answer it, the heroes spend a long night in the confined space of the apartment. Remembering the past that can no longer be returned, and imagining the future, which is frightening with its uncertainty, Tanya and Artem want to catch the present, in which they feel good together.
