Three old friends living in distant cities decide to help each other get rid of people who stand in their way to achieve happiness.

The screening of a movie "Daybreak" at the "Liberty" Cinema is interrupted by an unusual event - actors come to life on the screen, start conversations among themselves, draw the audience into them. Crowds gather around the cinema, the relevant authorities and services wonder what to do in this complicated situation. Also arriving is the censor, a man reaching his fifties, a one-time literary critic and journalist. The line between fiction and reality begins to blur.

With the help of a friend, the young couple manages to rent a small apartment. However, their life is not going well. Peter begins to cheat on Bozena. Accidentally met Joe slips the girl a drug. One time was enough for Bozena to go in search of an illusory land of happiness - Alabama, which does not exist. However, the girl finds out too late.

She and her husband Markus are actually a good team, both privately and professionally. They have a daughter who is studying in New York. She hardly knows anything about her. They go on a short trip to the Baltic Sea with a couple they know. Ebba discovers Arne's little circus on the beach. The Dane flirts with her and offers her a vacancy as a dancing bear in his traveling circus. She accepts the offer and goes on tour with him.

In 1978 Włodzimierz Puchalski sets off for Antarctica to fulfil his dream. The structural axis of the film is Puchalski's sea voyage to Antarctica, which was aborted by his death on 19 January 1979 on King George Island. It is interwoven with Puchalski's relationship with his daughter.
