The card also featured Doug Marshall defending his light heavyweight championship against Ariel Gandulla and Paulo Filho defending his middleweight championship against Chael Sonnen. WEC 27: Marshall vs. McElfresh was the third mixed martial arts event held by the World Extreme Cagefighting under Zuffa management. The event was held on May 12, 2007. UFC lightweight fighter and future WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner was expected to make his promotional debut on this card against Richard Crunkilton, but the fight was removed from the card after Varner suffered training injuries.

This event saw the fourth appearance of future Superstar Gilbert Melendez who took on Olaf Alfonso. This event also saw two of the most well known fighters in the world Karo Parisyan take on Shonie Carter. The main event saw Mike Serr take on Rafael Real.
