Happily pregnant Nelum is diagnosed with cancer. After her baby boy is born safely, she approaches death.

Amila comes from a small village in Sri Lanka. After losing his parents, he moves to Colombo. He works as a construction worker in a Chinese building site and looks after his four siblings. His sister Inoka suffers from a congenital heart defect and the only way to save her is an urgent and expensive surgery to be performed in India. While Amila is trying to find the money he needs, he just meets the wrong person at the right time, and gets caught up in the child trafficking business…

In 1814, a nobleman from the Kandian Kingdom of Sri Lanka helped the British army to revolt against the king of Southern India, but was driven to a traitor. His wives have to choose between committing suicide or marrying outcasts. Instead of suicide, young and beautiful Tikiri chooses to marry an untouchable, named Vijaya.

In the immediate aftermath of the Sri Lankan insurrection of 1971, while the leadership of the JVP, the insurgent political party, was incarcerated, some JVP activists made attempts to revive their movement. A young Catholic nun in a convent in Colombo, exposed to these activists, develops an empathy with the JVP cause, fired by her sense of injustice. Her engagement with these revolutionaries, soon joined by their leaders who were released from prison in late 1977, takes her on a tumultuous spiritual and political roller-coaster where she finds her loyalties leaning more towards party activism than her religious obligations. Finally, she reaches a crisis point and is compelled to make a choice between the two, but she continues to question her own decisions in the context of a rapidly changing political landscape in the 1980s and a resultant dramatic shift in the JVPs outlook and strategy.
