Ishwar and Shanti are childhood friends who come from different social backgrounds. They live, study and travel together and fall in love with each other as adults. When Ishwar's sister-in-law chooses a bride for him, he refuses and announces that he wants to marry Shanti.

The film is a gloomy tale of childhood lovers, who separate and unite at the end.

A newly-wed Odia couple's life is disrupted when the husband is overcome with amnesia. The wife gets sympathy from a doctor friend, but the relationship is misunderstood and ridiculed by others, including the doctor's Bombay-born wife who gets involved with another good-for-nothing Bombayite.

Having delivered a child before marriage, Gul entrusts the baby to her driver, Kishan, to whom she gives money for her daughter, Sona. When Gul decides to see Sona, she discovers that Kishan & Sona have disappeared.
