A former U-boat commander becomes a pastor to ease the suffering of young Hamburg women in trouble.
Tommy, 22 years old, is broke and in debt, still lives with his parents and is constantly arguing with his father. The young man wants to break out of this life and believes he has finally found the opportunity to do so. A job advertisement promising 400 marks a week seems tailor-made for him. He quickly makes the acquaintance of a pusher column run by Kalle. But Tommy's ideas of a free life are soon nipped in the bud: He works more than 12 hours a day, goes from door to door to sell magazine subscriptions, lives in a filthy shared room, experiences psychological violence. He leads a life like a slave. How can he get out of this hopeless situation?
The movie depicts the events from July until September of 1914 which led to the defeat of the German troops at the Marne. While Sebastian Haffner explains and comments on operations and decisions on the basis of situation maps, key scenes are depicted by actors. A main focus is thereby placed by Haffner onto the controversial mission of lieutenant-colonel Richard Hentsch who is said to have, during a war patrol to the various army high commands, contributed to the abortion of the operations significantly.

This is the third time that Vik and his family have moved to a different city. Vik is a shy child who finds it hard to make new friends, and whenever he finally does start to open up to someone, his father's job inevitably causes the family to up sticks and relocate to a different part of the country, and Vik has to start all over again. Luckily for him, this time he soon meets Mai and Oto in the city park.
