An aged Charlie Chaplin narrates his life to his autobiography's editor, including his rise to wealth and comedic fame from poverty, his turbulent personal life and his run-ins with the FBI.
Stevie, fresh from prison in Scotland, finds a job on a London construction site. The working conditions are poor and most of the men are working under aliases, due to immigration status and to not conflict with their "signing on" for unemployment benefits. Some coworkers help Stevie secure housing, squatting in a council estate. Then Stevie meets Susan, from Ireland, who's struggling to be a professional singer.
"The Journal" is a short comedy that follows a lonely drunk through a wild and hazy night. Presented with a journal by his friends who wish he'd remember his boozy antics, he is horrified to read the sloppy entries on the painful morning after. Gothic demon women, half-naked swimmers, mimes and tattooed bruisers fight through he fog of his memory, pushing him straight to AA.
