In the pre-New Year bustle of Moscow, Galina accidentally meets her first love, former classmate Eduard. Remembering the past, they decide to celebrate the New Year together. In the winter of 1941, young cadets from the Red Banner School named after the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR stood on the Volokolamsk Highway, forty kilometers from the capital. The Nazis managed to break through the front line, and the company was surrounded, but the inexperienced soldiers rushed into battle with courage and bravery to defend the capital.

A daughter from her first marriage comes to her father, who has had another family for a long time, intending to enroll in a local pedagogical institute.

The events take place on a deserted island, where Sasha and Rita, who are in love, are disembarked by a motorboat in the early morning. There they meet Rita's ex-husband.

Further east of the Dark Blue Sky, where the Heavenly Horsemen fought, the story of a Czechoslovakian fighter squadron takes place, to which Second Lieutenant Jandak arrives as a rookie. He then experiences both his first love and a battle high above the clouds in the collective of combat pilots. Combat pilots on the Eastern Front thus experience similar stories to their Western colleagues, with the same goals and plans and the same slim prospects of survival in their daily life-and-death battles. Not surprisingly, they fought at a time when they had a common enemy, characterised by the Messerschmitt aircraft.

Oleg, a veteran of the German Army, arrives in St. Petersburg at the call of his old comrade-in-arms Vladimir. Instead of the expected well-paid job and decent accommodation, he finds himself in a pine forest, where former army captains and majors live in tanks (their tank column, which the putschists sent to Leningrad, was stopped halfway and forgotten) and earn their living by dressing up as gypsies, while his friend is obsessed with private entrepreneurship. Moreover, both of them fall in love with Olga, a provincial girl who has come to study at a theater school.
