The event was headlined by a heavyweight bout between combat sports veterans Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock. Bellator 138 (Kimbo vs Shamrock) was the highest rated Bellator event ever. It did an average of 1.6 million viewers for the whole event and a peak of 2.4 million during the Kimbo vs Shamrock fight. And a DVR peak of 2.9 million. The previous high was Bellator 131 (Tito vs Bonnar) Which did 1.2 million average for the entire event and a peak of 2 million during the Tito vs Bonnar fight. And a DVR peak of 2.2 million

Bellator 169: King Mo vs Ishii was held on December 16, 2016 at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. The event aired live in prime time on Spike TV. The event was headlined by a heavyweight bout between former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion and Rizin Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Muhammed Lawal and Japanese Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii. Lawal won the two-night, eight-man tournament at Rizin Fighting Federation on New Year's Eve in Japan. A 2008 Olympic gold medalist in judo, Ishii began his MMA career in December 2009 and made his Bellator debut in June 2016 against Quinton Jackson at Bellator 157: Dynamite 2. Bellator 169 is a Bellator MMA and BAMMA co-promoted event with the BAMMA 27 show filling out the rest of the card. Several top Irish prospects including Dylan Tuke, Ryan Curtis, Rhys McKee, and James Gallagher were featured on the card.

Bellator 177: Dantas vs. Higo took place on April 14, 2017 at Budapest Sports Arena in Budapest, Hungary . The event aired on Spike TV. This event marked Bellator's second event in Hungary. The event featured both MMA and kickboxing bouts. The main event was originally scheduled to feature Eduardo Dantas against Darrion Caldwell, but Caldwell withdrew due to injury. Leandro Higo stepped in as a replacement. Due to the short notice, the fight was changed from a Bantamweight title bout to a non-title contest at a catchweight of 139 pounds. Bellator Kickboxing 6 was headlined by a Welterweight world title rematch featuring Zoltan Laszak against Karim Ghajji. Additionally, two-time Glory Featherweight Champion Gabriel Varga made his Bellator Kickboxing debut against Hungarian Gabor Gorbics.
