A small Oklahoma town is stripped of its innocence when one of its boys turns up mute and bloodied by the lakeside. Unable to tell his story, the local sheriff embarks on a quest to uncover the roots of a gruesome crime. He's led to Ainsley DuPree and her new husband, Jack, a man whose interest in family may very well outweigh his morals.

AJ Manglehorn is an aging, ordinary guy in a small town. He nurses his sick cat, squeezes out a conversation with the local bank teller every Friday, and eats at the same place every day. But there is more to Manglehorn than meets the eye: he’s an ex-con who, 40 years ago, gave up the woman of his dreams for a big ‘job’. After a dramatic effort to start over, Manglehorn faces a terrifying moment and is unmasked as a guy with a very, very dark past.

After some personal trauma, Wilson Walmsley is invited to work as a substitute teacher in a suburban public high school. He finds lack of authority and interest in the school direction and teacher body; uncontrolled and abusive students in an environment of disrespect and lack of discipline. He becomes close to the arts teacher Louise and to the smart and abused student Joey. When he saves Louise from a sexual assault of the student Davey, Louise and him are sued by Davey's family lawyer; then Davey's girlfriend beats Louise. The upset Walmsley lures, drugs and kidnaps Joey and six troublemakers of his class and brings them to his isolate real estate in Alpine, Texas. When the seven students wake up, they are naked and caged in cages with electric fences. When Walmsley arrives, he advises that his class will begin, and any disrespect or lack of discipline will be duly punished, and shots Joey to make clear his intentions. And the class begins.
Inspired by the dark and grim stories of Edgar Allan Poe, "Variant U" is the terrifying tale of a man haunted by the ghosts he sees. Sick of co-habitating with the unaware living, the ghosts compel the only person who can see them into unleashing a deadly virus on human-kind. But does this newfound terrorist actually see ghosts or is he just insane.
Ellen's grandson, James, proposes to question the candidates for President of the US to determine why they chose to run. They invite one of the prospects, Raye, to dinner and stack the deck with 2 people who have previously had trouble with Raye and have reason to hate him. Dinner consists of much argument about his undemocratic views and proposals. Everyone leaves very displeased with him. Ellen tells James she is very upset about Raye's ideas. In the next scene Raye is shot down in a parking garage. 2 police inspectors arrive to question Ellen and James the next morning. James reveals his suspicions of Ellen but the scene ends without absolute resolution.
