A gallery of characters in Brooklyn in the 1950s are crushed by their surroundings and selves: a union strike leader discovers he is gay; a prostitute falls in love with one of her clients; a family cannot cope with the fact that their daughter is illegitimately pregnant.
Anthony and Dolores Montelli, along with their four children, move into their dream house in Amityville and are immediately plagued by a string of paranormal experiences. When the abusive Anthony wrongly places the blame on the children, Dolores recruits a local Catholic priest to exorcise the house.

Haley used her directorial debut to create “the most concentrated dosage of Christmas feeling, dreamy, full of wonder." While the visual aspect creates a stream of vivid holiday cheer set post-World War II, the audio was created to be nostalgic for the sound that came out of that generation.
