After a long job search, the main character of the film receives an offer of employment with a wealthy family as a private tutor. She quickly decides to take the job, and a music teacher tries to win her favor, but the girl is more interested in a car mechanic she met briefly. Reason and financial considerations prevail over love, as her beloved is unemployed and unable to find work. Soon, tragedy strikes.
Surrounded by a few party officials, Alexei Ivanov, a stakhanovist smelter, is decorated by Stalin. The "Little Father of the Peoples" takes this opportunity to invoke threats of war.... One day, war indeed breaks out. Bombs fall on the field where Alexei finds himself in the company of the schoolmistress Natacha, his fiancée. Alexei joins the Red Army and soon becomes a sergeant. Fighting rages and German troops advance. Natacha is arrested and deported. But the tide turns decisively with the German defeat at Stalingrad. Now the major offensive against Hitler can begin.
Wanda Tarska, an actress, meets Ketty Brinx, an American woman, and they hit it off. They go on a trip to the mountains together, where tragedy strikes. The young American falls into a ravine. The problem is that a knife and a cut rope are found at the scene of the tragedy, and suspicion falls on her companion. There is one more clue: the name Henry Gieras, which Ketty shouted out as she fell into the ravine.
