Widowed Bhavanidevi rules her palatial home with an iron hand. Nothing is permitted to be touched or moved without her permission and approval. She has two sons, and one daughter. She dotes on her daughter, Shobha, and son-in-law, Khubchand. When her eldest son marries a young woman, Sheela, Bhavani is enraged because Sheela did not bring in enough dowry. To teach Sheela a lesson, she burns her foot, leaving a petrified Sheela submissive and open to even more abuse. When Bhavani's second son gets married without her permission, she is angered even more, and will not have anything to do with her new daughter-in-law, Durga. When Durga insists on living there, she is permitted to do so, not knowing that she has now entered a household where she will be another abused and submissive slave to her dominating mother-in-law.

Rivalry has existed between Ranimaa and a small and hostile community. The passage of time has only widened the gap between the two. When Ranimaa's heir apparent, Seema, attempts to make peace, she is severely reprimanded by Ranimaa. Then Seema meets with Ajay Jain and both fall in love. When Ranimaa finds out about this, she indicates her disapproval of Ajay. Seema, however, is adamant about this, and will only marry Ajay, and wants peace between the two communities. Finally, Ranimaa agrees to make peace with the tribe, only to be blackmailed by Manghu, who knows that Ranimaa's had a questionable past, a past so terrible that she will kill anyone who will dare to reveal it.

Vishal (Rishi Kapoor) comes from a wealthy Hindu family. His father is well known Chandraprakash Singh (Amrish Puri), and his mom is a housewife, Sharda (Asha Parekh). Vishal falls in love with a young Catholic girl, Ruby Miranda (Farha). While Ruby's dad (Alok Nath) approves of the marriage, Chandraprakash does not, and will not even hear of his son marrying someone not of equal status in wealth, leave alone a different religion. He is all the more enraged when he learns that Vishal is not really his son.

Anand (Feroz Khan) is a London returned teacher who has sought employment in a local school in India. His co-teachers are Geeta (Asha Parekh), Girdharilal (Jankidas), Pandey (Asit Sen), Lalita (Lalita Kumari), and Principal (Brahm Bhardwaj). Anand's students, though fairly mature, lack sex education, and he discusses this at length with the other teachers and the Principal, and he is met with opposition. Anand is attracted to Geeta, but Geeta shows no interest in him. Several female students are attracted to Anand. Anand naively is openly friendly with all his students, however, Anand faces trouble when one of his female students becomes pregnant, and he is accused of raping her.

Raju, John, Suleman and Shakti seize a hidden treasure of the deceased Anil Kumar. They face Kumar's widow Sharada who identifies Raju as her lost son. They then have to deal with Bandit Devi Singh.

Ram Kumar (Kader Khan) is the eldest of four sons in his family. He has brought up his three younger brothers, Shyam (Kanu Chauhan), Sohan (Jeetendra), and Mohan (Rishi Kapoor), with love and fatherly care, together with his wife, Sita (Asha Parekh). Sita has a younger sister, Gita (Juhi Chawla), who also lives with them. Gita is a child-widow. Ram does not approve of anyone referring to Gita as such. Ram decides that it is time for Shyam and Sohan to get married, and he picks their brides for them. Shyam marries Mona, and Sohan marries Sheela (Anita Raj). With the entry of these two new wives, the equilibrium of love and respect is disrupted, as both want more control and demand more respect, which leads to clashes and quarrels all round, and changes in the lives of all the inhabitants. Eventually, in the end, everyone lives happily together and Mohan and Gita get married.

Kaalia - A name that spells terror in the minds of people and the police, but Kaalia was not always like this. Years ago he was a mere simpleton. This path of violence leads Kaalia to inspector Raghubir Singh's jail. Outside of jail, Shahani starts reclaiming his power, and inside jail, Kaalia clashes with Raghubir Singh.
