The kingdom is ruled by the cruel King Anthracite, who is bored with everything in the world. One day he decides that only magical clogs will please him. The superhuman task of making such clogs falls to the cobbler Jakub. Fortunately, he also has the wit of his beloved Anežka and the magic of the permon Šišla to help him.

When a childless couple learn that they cannot have children, it causes great distress. To ease his wife's pain, the man finds a piece of root in the backyard and chops it and varnishes it into the shape of a child. However the woman takes the root as her baby and starts to pretend that it is real.

Nothing seems to disturb Uncle Egon's peace, who lives in his castle under the watchful eye of the strict but fair housekeeper Mrs. Bischlock. The idyll is destroyed by the housekeeper herself, who abruptly resigns because she refuses to live under the same roof as a ghost. The musical adventure culminates in the magical world of dreams.

The story begins in 1984 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, few years before the end of Communist era. The band Pražský výběr (Prague's selection) has just received the news thier 5-year ban has expired and they are alowed to perform once again. This half fantasy half document about the band would draw the atmosphere of middle european late Communist era and the eufory of it's end.

New husband Adam reluctantly takes a job with state security in a totalitarian country, thus becoming a secret police agent. This "contract with the devil" helps secure a flat for the happy couple, as well as a prosperous future. However, he soon finds out that he too is under surveillance.
