In the women's cancer ward of a large Glaswegian hospital, a group of patients share their hopes and dreams for the future

Nesbitt faces a frosty reception from his family when he finally staggers home from the World Cup, several months later spurned by delinquent sons and driven out of the house by his exasperated spouse, he finds himself reluctantly sharing a squalid bedsit with his wholesome and equally estranged pal, Jamesie. ‘I Married the wrong woman’ laments the rueful Rob rekindling memories of his first true love. A sweet schoolgirl called Isobel Niddrie.

Local journalist, Cameron Colley writes articles that are idealistic, from the viewpoint of the underdog. A twisted serial killer seems to have some motives. His brutal murders are also committed on behalf of the underdog. The stories begin to merge and Cameron find himself inextricably and inextricably implicated by the brutal killer. The arms dealer that Cameron plans to expose is found literally 'disarmed' before he can put pen to paper. The brewery chief, loathed by Cameron, who sold up at the expense of his workers, finds himself permanently unemployable. The police are convened of Cameron's guilt and so are half his friends and colleagues. Cameron is forced to employ all his investigative skills to find the real killer and his motive.

In 1866 St Andrews, Scotland, 15-year-old Tommy Morris is an avid golfer like his legendary and pioneering father, Tom Morris, now greenskeeper for The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, as well as the town's club- and ball-maker. The two-time winner of the first major golf tournament, The Open Championship, which he founded in 1860, Old Tom also established golf's standard of 18 holes per round. But young Tommy is beginning to chafe at his father's dictates, especially in the rapidly changing world they live in. Tommy soon outshines his father, winning The Open three consecutive times.
