One day, an NKVD driver, rolling a rolled-up cigarette from a newspaper, notices that he has torn a portrait of Stalin.

Private Kornilov gets an order from his commanding officer to guard a military installation far away from base. They promise that he will be picked up in a week. When Kornilov arrives at the site he discovers that the only place he can sleep is the excavator that he is supposed to guard. A week passes, but nobody comes to pick him up…
