Set around the Volga river, the story begins around 1900, when Russian peasants are let free and allowed to own their farmlands. But soon they suffer from losses during the 1917 Russian Revolution and the following Civil War. Then, the major national catastrophe is started by Stalin: his communist government kills millions of farmers and steals all their food supplies, causing the longest and deadliest famine all over central Russia during the 1920s and 1930s.
In 1953, the year Stalin died, many prisoners (some political, but mostly common criminals) were released from the Soviet Gulags. This is the story of a remote settlement which was under attack by a bunch of these recently-released blood-thirsty thugs in the summer of 1953, and the townspeople, along with a two political prisoners, who try to stop them.

A successful Moscow doctor, who has his own clinic, comes to his father in Minsk. His father was once one of the leading doctors of the city, and now he turned out to be unnecessary and forgotten. An old man in need of care and attention moves to his son in the city. But soon the son and his wife send the old man to a shelter for the elderly. However, the grandson, who loved his grandfather and understood the cruelty of what is happening, leaves his parents and takes the old man to his future wife.
The film, based on the war stories by Andrei Platonov, centers on the story of a soldier Ivan Vladyko. The war is over and Ivan begins to search for his son, who disappeared after their native village burned down. During the search he meets a woman with three children who takes a lively part in his fate.
