An ambitious theatre director arrives in Gyulaháza from the capital. The aim of the young Debrődy is to shake up the locals and turn the life of the town upside down.

Beautifully shot in black and white, this almost wordless film follows the last day in a man's life. A detailed, attentive, and contemplative study on self-loathing, loss of human dignity, and hopelessness.

Géza Böszörményi's 1975 German-Hungarian co-production film stars János Balogh as a dance and etiquette teacher. He learned the craft from his father and now travels the country with his son Simon. They are on their way to Hortobágy to "celebrate" the closing ball of their dance school. But before that, they are teaching the locals the tricks of the art of gentlemanly behaviour in Pest. But the Hortobágy dance exam is not as successful as in the good old days. The young people have only one thing on their minds: to live in the capital as soon as possible, and in the Hortobágy they will soon be nothing but horsemen and cowboys entertaining the western tourists of the National Park. János Balogh and his son also go back to the bleak and soulless prefab housing estate, where Simon tells his father that he no longer wants to be a dance teacher.

Allegory of the suppression of the 1919 revolution and the advent of fascism in Hungary; in the countryside, a unit of the revolutionary army spares the life of father Vargha, a fanatical priest. He comes back and leads massacres. A new force, represented by Feher, apparently avenges the people, but only to impose a different, more refined and effective kind of repression.

On his return from America, András simply cannot find his place: he has lost his wife, friends and job, and he cannot even find his way back to his former great love. Eventually, as a surrogate father, he takes in a wild young girl (Zsuzsa Czinkóczi) and a particularly strong bond is formed between these two rootless people. Márta Mészáros’s remarkable movie starring Jan Nowicki and Anna Karina is about displacement, loneliness and attachment.
