Ulrich Mühe plays a German businessman who was born completely without scruples. This makes him an eminently suitable candidate for success in the chaotic years after World War I. The shameless man's story is contrasted with that of his polar opposite, a Jewish anarchist.

The son of a Berlin industrialist is innocently sentenced to life in forced labor in Kenya. A colorful American reporter and Vietnam veteran clarifies the background and saves the young man with daring and more or less snappy sayings.

In the middle of the night, Nicki is once again haunted by intense feelings that she can't explain. A visit to the doctor is supposed to help and behold: the more he pokes around in the past, the more a connection between Nicki and her twin sister Karen becomes apparent. In addition, the two ladies are each pursued by a menacing man who roams the streets late at night with a knife and seems to be in cahoots with an oddball antiques dealer.
