Three officers sent by the Bey, arrives to a farming village to collect taxes. The villagers initiate the payoff sharing their goods but the bey's messengers persist in humiliating them, infringing their dignity and honor, which triggered contestations.

Lallemani, a young gangster who has just come out of jail, dreams of wealth by selling prohibited alcohol in the lost city Jendouba, while Lenin, a cop, is losing his gun in a bus. Lallemani and his girlfriend Noor are turning Lenin’s life upside down and dragging him deeper and deeper into the dark underworld of modern Tunisia.

Both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are sensitively explored in the Tunisian-French drama. Richard, a French TV journalist has been assigned to do a political story in Jerusalem the night before Yitzhak Rabin and Yasir Arafat sign their peace accord. Richard is glad to go as it gives him a chance to see his girlfriend Esther, a psychologist. Esther's father Moshe is continually tormented by his Holocaust memories. Hammoudi, nicknamed "Local Radio," is Richard's taxi driver and guide. He tells Richard the story of his family which was uprooted in 1948 resulting in the disappearance of his grandmother. Mysteriously, her picture appeared in a recent Arabic newspaper. Richard, intrigued, decides to center his investigations upon "Local Radio's" story. As he delves deeper into their lives he discovers that the ancient rivalries between the Israeli's and Palestinians is far too deep and complex to be easily explained away.

Farés a taxi driver, the happiest man in the world brings his wife Fatma home from the clinic after having their first born son, but fate decides otherwise when he picks up a mysterious passenger.

An 18 year old on the island Djerba, Aicha, is married to Said, who works in Tunis for much of the year. Aicha breaks with tradition and decides to join Said in Tunis, weaving rugs to make money. Said asks that she give him a son, so Aicha lives under the rule of her mother-in-law.
