Summer 1940, Lithuania is already occupied by the Soviets. In the interrogation underground, interrogator Pijus Karpavičius is nervously smoking, while in another room two arrested people meet - priest Antanas and Kazys, the leader of the still-organising anti-Soviet underground.

Petras Kurmelis is a hardworking but tight-fisted peasant, he marries for convenience and wants the bride to bring a good dowry to the house. But marriage does not bring him happiness.

The peasant Juras Tarutis takes part in the struggle for independent Lithuania and in the election campaign for the Sejm, painfully experiencing the fascist coup in 1926.
