Produced for newly independent Sakha television in the early nineties, Summer House is a pioneering document of a film culture in the making. The directorial debut of actor Anatoly Vasiliev, who also stars, the film tells the seemingly simple story of a man returning to his native village to purchase a house, only to find himself caught between the worlds of the living and the dead. Drawing on deep wells of Sakha spirituality and folk symbolism, and cast with local, non-professional actors, Summer House is a rarely-seen gem of independent filmmaking and a key piece of Sakha film history.

Each short story is an independent story exploring how cinema begins, how it influences us and where the line between the screen and reality lies. The film almanac has the widest range of genres, themes, geography of authors, time of action and even frame format. It can be a short sketch from the set, where the lighting technician suddenly changes places and importance with the most influential auteur director; preparation for the first film screening in Rus'; a conversation between friends immediately after the film; a story of a difficult choice between creative freedom and a career; and finally, a free interpretation of the 1986 film about the life of a simple fisherman from Kaliningrad.

She is a healer. A hermit. A Fool-in-God. She is a little over forty years old. She doesn’t disdain alcohol. She can be ridiculous, humiliated, offended. She has long been indifferent about herself. Everybody avoids her and is afraid of her, but secretly at night they all hurry to her home. After all, only she can get rid of their illnesses. For her, this is a damnation, and each time she swears that she won’t help people any more, but each time she is unable to refuse them. She knows that her gift will ruin her some time, but she continues to be the only chance of salvation for people.
