When World War II comes, various family members choose different masters; some even choose to work for the Soviets. During the WWII, veteran Panas Petrovich Baida lost his son. Many years passed, and Panas Petrovich came to terms with his loss, hiding his grief deep in his heart. But one day, he heard news about children who had been saved by soldiers from the military. All the boys who did not remember their names were named Ivan Immortal. They are still alive today, but fate has scattered them to different corners of the country. Panas Petrovich sets out to visit each of them, hoping to recognize his son among them.

The movie takes place in the late 1930s in the Far East. A group of pioneering surveyors led by Kirill Kostomarov is to lay the route of a railroad through remote taiga areas. To avoid unnecessary expenditure of human labor, Kostomarov proposes his own variant of laying - along the rocks, not along the floodplain of the river, as approved by the project assignment.
