Writer Paul Benjamin is nearly hit by a bus when he leaves Auggie Wren's smoke shop. Jabez meets with the publisher Daniel Webster who offers him a chance to break the contract with the devil.

After losing eight years to prison, cowboy J. W. Coop is released to return to life as a professional rodeo cowboy in the 60's.
