A mental hospital becomes a sanctuary for their ex-patients when they feel rejected by a society who thinks that they have an illness that can never be cured. "Everybody wants me to come back here," says Yuyun. But she tries hard to prove that she is cured. She can live normally like other "healthy people", and is able to work well, and even to fall in love.

After the Japanese occupation, the Indonesian people began fighting for independence, culminating with the 1 March 1949 general attack on the Dutch-held capital at Yogyakarta, led by Suharto. Amidst this backdrop two families face their own, personal issues.

Kasino and Indro work at their uncle’s chicken farm. They are jealous of Dono, son of the uncle who studied in America, and returns with an American girlfriend, Madonna. But Dono is already arranged to marry Ayu Sukoco by his parents. The comedy is played out in the chicken farm, Madonna’s awkwardness in a village environment, Dono running away with his girlfriend because his parents disapprove of them, an auto repair shop, and a dream about entering Indian territory.

City students come to the village for KKN with all their arrogance and pretentiousness, led by a fat student named Joe (Didi Petet). Many problems arise, starting from Budi (James Lapian) and Imam (Leroy Oesmani) who are not doing KKN well, but instead competing for a beautiful village flower named Neneng (Deasy Ratnasari). Likewise with Pinky (Meriam Bellina) and May (Sylvana Herman) who went down to the village as if they were going to shop at an elite shop. Their arrival also made the village hoodlums feel angry, so that the KKN activities were disturbed.
