The fates of two people align as a beggar tries to steal money from a sleeping newspaper boy. Instead of reporting the crook to the police, the benevolent boy buys him a hearty meal, convinces him to give up drinking and helps him back onto the right path in life. A carpenter’s apprentice, Spaan (‘Chip’), has been thrown out by his master for being romantically involved with his daughter, Ernestine. On the road, he meets the slender tailor’s apprentice Naal (‘Needle’) and the drunken shoemaker’s apprentice Syl (Awl), and the three form a warm friendship. One day, they are lucky to win a large sum of money in the lottery, after which they go their separate ways with the promise of meeting up again one year later. Prominent inventor Lucius Lindner has taken his own life to escape ‘The Black Ravens’, a gang of which he was once a member himself. He leaves Sonja the secret formula for his excelsior rays, an invention which the criminal gang is eager to get their hands on. Sonja follows her father’s advice to seek out safe lodgings with her friend in the big city. Unfortunately, the Black Ravens, whose leader is known as the ‘Queen of Clubs’, are ahead of her and kidnap Sonja at the main train station. Fate leads them down vastly different paths, and their son Hans grows up and is forced to become a criminal. A picture of the life of the Danish people from the late 1820s to the introduction of the free constitution in 1849. A fictional character, Rasmus Nielsen, travels around the country, first as a traveling teacher, later in other positions, and through his experiences we are introduced to the conditions of various population groups. The central figure in the portrayal of historical figures is the politician Orla Lehmann.
On her way to her aunt's house, motherless young Edith is kidnapped by a white slave trader and put in a brothel. Luckily Mr. Faith, Edith's travel acquaintance, senses that something is wrong.
The new students Eigil and Arne celebrate the end of school. "You are now grown men and women with a carnal desire that every human being contains. This desire can be like a fire in your body, but don't let yourself burn to death," their old teacher admonishes. Nevertheless, the encounter with Copenhagen and its many temptations turns out to be fateful for the charming Eigil and the otherwise faithful Arne.
Having grown up in poverty, the ambitious Nana is determined to break out of it. She becomes part of the Paris theatre scene and gets involved with several of the men who court her. However, Nana’s impoverished past catches up with her, and the story comes to a tragic end. Stumfilm.dk

Laurent, a painter, observes the performance of the dancer Marguerite and immediately feels drawn to her beauty and being. He invites her to his studio and the two fall in love. Unfortunately, Marguerite is already married to Stelio, who soon finds out about the affair. Stelio seeks out the hypnotist Pizarro for revenge, and the story takes a deadly turn. (Stumfilm.dk)
